It has been a few years since I have been interested in hockey, but this article by ESPN has renewed my interest and also reminded me how much I miss the NHL. The biggest issue that I am seeing is free agency. There have been a lot of questions about it. A lot of guys are going to be signing for millions and others are going to be signing for less. And with the salary cap is coming, the free agent market will probably be quiet as well. At least for now. I would expect the NHL to end up with somewhere around 90 players making the league minimum salary. At least some of the younger players will get more money, but there will also be a lot of guys who are barely making minimum who would not be able to live off the pay of a salary cap. However, the NHL needs to get rid of the two way contracts. There was a time when it was a good thing for a player to play on both sides of the ice. Back then it made the NHL a better league. Nowadays, the two way contracts are getting rid of that and making sure that players only play on one side. On the bright side, the NHL is slowly but surely returning to its previous glory. Teams have new coaches and new faces on the ice. The NHL needs some good old-fashioned intimidation. The league should make sure that other teams know that they are the team that everybody wants to play against. Not all teams are that much better than the other teams in the league. A team could just as well come from a smaller market as they could come from a larger one. A look at the world of hockey in your inbox The future of hockey looks rather bright right now.
